Villa is a fun new way to work out and play, and turns any room into your own spatial fitness and gaming space powered by music. It feels like playing VR, but without a headset. Villa’s computer vision and spatial intelligence run on Mac.
Villa is built for short bursts of play called Microdoses. Seven activities ship at launch. Every song you play generates new game levels. Villa has partnered with NTS Radio, the global online radio station, for infinite mixtapes to move to. Playlists from YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music work too.
Why
In the US, 44% of Gen Z struggle to stay motivated to exercise, with similar rates in the UK, according to McKinsey. 1.8 billion adults don’t get enough weekly physical activity, according to the World Health Organization.
“Villa is a response to a world that turns everything into work, when the most magical and productive moments in life feel like play,” said co-founder and CEO Andrew McPhee. “It has the potential of YouTube, if YouTube were interactive.”
Company
Based in Venice Beach, California. Villa creates frontier spatial products that help the world to move and play. The Villa app runs on Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) running macOS Sonoma or later, with all spatial processing handled locally on-device. Villa works on MacBooks, iMacs, Mac minis, and Mac Studios with cameras. Compatible with headphones and large external screens like monitors, projectors and TVs via HDMI. An iOS expansion is under development.
Team
Villa’s co-founders Andrew McPhee and Jokubas Dargis got the world snapping spatial photos with Seene. McPhee was the designer and co-founder, and Dargis was a lead engineer. When Snap acquired Seene in 2016, their computer vision technology and team became a foundation for Snapchat’s AR, which grew to hundreds of millions of daily users. Villa’s third co-founder, Micah Heykoop, previously founded and sold the creator platform Candid.
